children working on computersNO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT

In passing the bipartisan No Child Left Behind Act (P.L. 107-110), lawmakers united behind the common cause of recognizing the importance of creating a stronger public school system in which every child has the opportunity to attend a good school staffed by qualified teachers.  In just a few short years since the passage of NCLB, we have witnessed significant improvements in schools throughout the nation.  By making our school systems a national priority, we have implemented another safeguard to ensure the prosperity of future generations.

With the passage of NCLB, the federal government is now spending far more money for elementary and secondary education than at any other time in our nation's history.  I am committed to ensuring that the state of Kansas receives its fair share of education funding.  I have always supported, and will continue to support, education funding for our State's schools and schools across the nation.

As the Department of Education works to implement the policies of No Child Left Behind, I encourage parents to stay up-to-date on all the latest developments regarding this important legislation.

One of my main priorities is to see that we recruit and retain more quality teachers by providing them with the opportunity to refresh and increase their skills in the classroom. I am a proponent of providing states and school districts with flexible funding, which allows them to use funds in a variety of different ways to improve teacher quality.

Parents and guardians are integral part of their children's education.  In order to effectively ensure that our nation's children receive the best education, parental involvement is essential.  In addition to promoting policies that strengthen our nation's school systems, I believe that we should also empower parents and guardians as well.  I invite you to visit the Department of Education's Web page to find out more about the resources available to you as parents and guardians.
