Congressional Internship
s

I offer internships on a semester basis throughout the school year as well as during the summer. In my Washington, D.C. office, summer internship is offered in two sessions. Priority is given to Kansas residents or those studying in Kansas who have completed at least their sophomore year of college. However, all applications will be considered. The positions are unpaid and are available as both full and part-time positions.

Congressional Interns will be provided the opportunity to work closely with staff in three areas: administrative and legislative in my Washington, D.C. office, and state services in my state offices. The Congressional Internship Program gives participants a solid understanding of the inner workings of the United States Senate by providing hands-on experience in a variety of duties.

 Washington, D.C. Office Congressional Internship

Administrative: All interns will assist with administrative duties including answering telephone calls and assisting in office maintenance. In addition, interns will provide constituents with private tours of the U.S. Capitol Building.

Legislative
: Congressional interns learn the mechanics of the legislative process in the U.S. Senate. Duties include helping the staff research legislative measures, and assess their potential effects on Kansas and the nation. Other day-to-day duties may be required. Interested students should possess strong writing skills and an interest in public policy.

 State Offices Congressional Internship

As you can see, there are many opportunities for interested Kansans to become directly involved in the work of the Senate. Besides these positions in my Washington office, my offices in Kansas (Topeka, Overland Park and Wichita) offer students who are seniors in high school and older the opportunity to gain first-hand experience working in a congressional office located a little closer to home!

State Services
: These internships are offered in my state offices, and allow interested students to work directly with Kansans who are experiencing problems with federal agencies. Caseworkers act as liaisons between constituents and government agencies, trying to resolve various difficulties at hand. Interns will have the opportunity to assist the staff in working with federal agencies like the Social Security Administration, the Veterans Administration and the Internal Revenue Service. Additionally, they will assist with administrative duties including answering telephone calls and assisting in office maintenance. Since much of the time will be devoted to addressing constituent opinions and concerns regarding current legislation, an interest and willingness to stay educated on current affairs is a must. Students with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as strong problem solving skills are encouraged to apply.
